Kinderzimmer-Tapete: Worauf du wirklich achten musst

Nursery wallpaper: What you really need to look out for

When parents look for a photo wallpaper for the nursery in our shop, the same question almost always comes up: What is appropriate for which age – and will it actually hold up if my child touches it? A fair question. Because a child’s room is not a showroom. It’s a place for playing, drawing, romping around, and sometimes a toy gets thrown against the wall.

Nevertheless – or perhaps precisely for this reason – an accent wall with a photo wallpaper is especially worthwhile here. It transforms a simple room into a world of adventure, a fairy-tale forest, or a starry sky. And because our wallpapers are self-adhesive and removable without residue, the wall simply grows along with your child.

Which motifs are suitable for which age?

First of all: There are no rigid rules. Every child is different. But from hundreds of orders and customer conversations, we have gathered some empirical values that have proven successful.

For the youngest (0–3 years)

At this age, it is less about the motif itself and more about the atmosphere in the room. Babies and toddlers react strongly to colors and contrasts. Soft pastel tones – pale green, dusty pink, soft beige – have a calming effect and actually help with falling asleep. Delicate cloud motifs, soft animal illustrations, or a subtle starry sky are ideal here.

What we do not recommend based on experience: Strong colors or highly detailed motifs. Not because they are harmful, but because they make the room feel restless, and restless is the last thing you want in a nursery.

Preschool age (3–6 years)

Now things get exciting. Imagination is running at full speed, and children love to immerse themselves in their wallpaper. Jungle motifs with hidden animals, underwater worlds, outer space – these are the long-standing favorites in our shop. One tip we often give: Choose a motif with many details to discover. A jungle where a parrot, a frog, and a monkey are hidden remains interesting for months. A single large animal gets boring faster.

School-age children (6 years and up)

Here you should definitely let your child have a say. That sounds obvious, but many parents order the wallpaper as a surprise – and sometimes the taste is off. From age six, children have clear ideas of how their room should look. Nature motifs, city panoramas, geometric patterns, or theme-based designs (sports, outer space, animals) work well. The colors can be bolder now: sage green, steel blue, warm terracotta.

Materials and safety – what matters most

In the nursery, your child sleeps, plays, and breathes. Therefore, what is stuck to the wall is not just a question of style.

Our self-adhesive photo wallpapers are completely PVC-free. That might sound like marketing, but it is a real criterion, especially in a nursery. Many inexpensive wallpapers and films contain PVC with plasticizers (phthalates), which can release pollutants into the room air over time. We consciously avoid this.

The printing inks are certified with the GREENGUARD Gold standard – one of the strictest certifications for indoor air quality, which specifically considers rooms for children and sensitive individuals. Put simply: The inks do not off-gas and do not burden the room air.

And as for durability: The material (170 g/m²) can withstand quite a lot. Fingerprints, smudge marks, the occasional pen stroke – all can be wiped away with a damp cloth. Not indestructible, but suitable for everyday life.

Why an accent wall is usually the better choice

Wallpaper all four walls? We can do that, but we rarely recommend it – especially in a child's room. A single wall with a strong motif looks better than four walls with patterns. The room remains calm, the motif stands out, and when it is time for a change, you swap one wall instead of four.

The best position: The wall behind the bed or the wall you see first when entering the room. Incidentally, a starry sky behind the bed is one of our best-selling nursery looks – it works at any age.

If the room is small

Small nursery rooms are the norm, not the exception. And here, a wallpaper can make a surprisingly big difference. Motifs with a sense of depth – a forest path leading into the distance, a horizon with sky – make the room appear larger. Light base tones reinforce this effect.

What we advise against: Dark, color-intensive motifs on all sides. On an accent wall – no problem. On four walls, a 10-square-meter room becomes a cave.

Three decor ideas that have inspired our customers

The Jungle Room: Lush greenery with hidden animals on the main wall or even the ceiling, combined with wooden furniture and earthy textiles. It feels like a little adventure but remains warm and cozy. Especially popular with children between 3 and 7.

The Forest Clearing: A light forest in green and beige tones, combined with white furniture and linen curtains. More calm, more poetic – perfect for children who need a retreat to read and dream.

Outer Space: A dark starry sky with planets behind the bed, plus fairy lights and dark blue-grey accents in the room. Children love falling asleep under their own starry sky – we hear that time and again.

You can find suitable motifs for all three ideas in our Nursery collection. Those looking for forest and animal motifs will also find what they are looking for in the Nature collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the wallpaper withstand everyday nursery life?
Yes – under normal conditions of use. The material is wipeable and robust enough for fingerprints and light contact. We would still recommend keeping a little distance directly at toddler-reach height, or starting the wallpaper a little higher up.

Which walls does it stick to?
On smooth, clean, dry surfaces. Standard painted plaster – the norm in most nurseries – works perfectly. You can find all the details on preparation in our application guide.

Can it be removed again?
Completely without residue. The wall remains just as it was before. That is exactly what the material is made for – so that you can swap the wallpaper when your child grows out of it.

When can colors get bolder?
From about three to four years of age, most children cope well with bolder colors. For younger children, we recommend more muted, warm tones – less because of the children themselves, but because the room then functions better as a sleeping space.

A good nursery wallpaper turns a normal room into a place your child experiences as their own. And when tastes change – in two, three, or five years – you peel off the wallpaper and stick on a new one. No contractors, no renovation, no drama.
